On Tuesday October 27, 2015 8th grade students at Bergen Middle visited the New Jersey State House in our Capital of Trenton. Due to the fact that 8th graders study Civics; the study of citizenship and government, this trip is meant to inspire students to become active and engaged citizens!
Students were able to explore the state house when they were taken on a tour of the buildings, visited the Senate and General Assembly chambers, and view historic spaces, art and architecture.
Students also participated in a “Make-A-Law” program where they learned how laws are made and the citizen’s role in the process. This program had students assume the role of lawmakers and lean the process of bill passage by demonstrating the skills of debate, discussion, negotiation and compromise.
